COLTS UNDER 15 REPORT

MATCH 1

SMRH U15  V. CARLTON U15

WEDNESDAY MAY 4th 2005, INVERLEITH

The 2005 Colts season started with a good 35 run victory for our U15’s against their Carlton counterparts at Inverleith.

After being put into bat SMRH suffered an early setback when skipper Chris Holden was out to the third ball of the innings but Peter Mountstephen and Ross McLaren got the innings back on track with a good partnership of 21.

Steven Ditchfield and Josh Mill carried on the good work to take us to 63-6 before an excellent unbroken partnership of 24 between our U13 captain Andrew Warnock 14 not out and T J Beattie 7 not out allowed SMRH to reach 87-6 in 20 overs.

In reply Carlton could only make 52-3 in their 20 overs but to be fair they batted in very poor light for most of their innings.  Ditchfield and McLaren opened the bowling and conceded only 12 runs between them in 6 overs.  Accurate bowling was maintained by Ben Docherty who bowled 3 good overs for 3 runs and by Chris Holden who took 1-8 in 4 overs.

Carlton were always behind the clock and when Watson’s schoolboy Tom Barrett was stumped by Mountstephen of the bowling of Nick Hay for 22 the game was as good as over.

This was an encouraging start to the season with the highlight being some splendid bowling and fielding and it was a considerable achievement not to concede a single boundary in our 20 overs in the field.

SMRH WON BY 35 RUNS

MATCH 2

SMRH U15 V. LIVINGSTON U15

WEDNESDAY MAY 11th 2005, INVERLEITH

It was 2 wins out of 2 for our U15’s after a fairly comfortable 27 run win against a good Livingston XI.

Things looked bleak early on with out top order falling cheaply against some very good bowling, in particular by M Ahmed who took 4-7 in four excellent overs.

Stewart Shaw batting at seven arrived at the crease to join Andrew Warnock and they put together a superb partnership to get us back in the game.

Andrew showed what a bright future he has with a magnificent innings of 44 and he was well supported by Stewart who hit 3 4s in his important innings of 19.

104-9 after 20 overs was a lot more than looked likely at one stage.

As in our two previous fixtures this season bowling and fielding was to prove decisive in us winning the match.

Ross McLaren and Alastair Stevens bowled good opening spells and they were well supported by Chris Holden, Ben Docherty and Stewart Shaw.

Stewart took two vital wickets to complete a good all round performance and Ben chipped in with his usual wicket.

Two Livingston wickets fell to run outs including their opener F Ahmed who made 35 and was the one batsman who threatened.

Peter Mountstephen kept wicket well and completed two fine stumpings to put the seal on a good victory.

SMRH WON BY 27 RUNS

MATCH 3

WATSONIANS U15 V. SMRH U15

WEDNESDAY JUNE 22nd 2005, MYRESIDE

SMRH U15’s lost their unbeaten record when losing to a powerful Watsonians outfit by 80 runs in a high scoring encounter at Myreside.

Watsonians won the toss on a very hot evening and with a fast outfield and short boundaries everything was in place for the batsmen to prosper.

Our six bowlers each took a wicket but the fact that 24 4’s and 2 6’s were conceded shows that too many bad balls were bowled to capable batsmen.

Almost all of the Watsonian batsmen showed ability the best of whom was Hamish Peddie who hit 8 4’s and a six in a fine 52 before being bowled by Ramsay Muir of the last ball of an innings total of 175-6 in 22 overs.

A daunting target set by the home team wasn’t made easier when Andrew Warnock was out to the 2nd ball of the innings but this led to a stand of 38 between Andrew Atterbury and Ross McLaren.  This was an excellent partnership against two Scotland age group bowlers in Robbie Scobie and Euan Chalmers and for half a dozen overs the ball flew to all parts of the ground.  Atterbury 24 and McLaren 12 were both bowled by Chalmers in the same over but another good partnership of 20 between Murray Matheson and Jonathan Thomson resulted.  It was a surprise when the solid Matheson was caught for 10 but young Jonathan Thomson hit three 4’s in a plucky 15, an innings which augurs well for the future.

A final score of 95-8 at over 4 runs per over was a fair effort against outstanding opponents.

WATSONIANS WON BY 80 RUNS

MATCH 4

FAULDHOUSE U15 V. SMRH U15

WEDNESDAY JULY 27th 2005, FAULDHOUSE

SMRH won an exciting encounter at Fauldhouse with a scampered leg bye of the last ball of the match.

On a gloomy night Chris Holden lost the toss and it was no surprise when the home side decided to bat first.

Mahon and Doonan made steady progress in the opening overs against some good bowling from Ramsay Muir and Will Taylor and at 30-0 Fauldhouse looked set for a good total.

They were however pegged back to 47-3 by three excellent pieces of cricket.  Firstly Will Taylor took a good catch at gully to remove Mahon for 18 and before a further run had been added the dangerous Jordan Kelly was run out by a superb direct hit from point by Jonathan Thomson.

Doonan was still batting well and had just hit Andrew Atterbury for six when he was brilliantly caught and bowled by Duncan Logan.

Cochrane and Middleton then batted well with the former severe on any loose bowling and a score in excess of 100 looked likely but Chris Holden ran out Cochrane for a fine 28 and the innings closed soon after on 83-5.

Avoiding early wickets was vital if SMRH were to win and openers Murray Matheson and Duncan Logan did an excellent job in compiling a stand of 29 for the first wicket.

Matheson was first out for 16 including three 4’s caught behind of the bowling of Mahon before James Gray joined Logan to take us within 35 runs of victory.

Duncan and Jonathan Thomson were out in quick succession but SMRH were still favourites with Andrew Warnock and Gray at the crease.  Although the latter was out with the score on 74 Warnock produced an excellent innings to carry us through to victory.

Four runs were needed of the last over and with a single required of the final ball Callum Goudie and Warnock ran a quick leg bye to secure the win.

Thanks to Jim Foster the cricket club’s President for transporting the boys through to Fauldhouse and a special word for Mrs Thomson who not only brought some players to the game but produced some much needed food and refreshments on a cold night.

MATCH 5

HERIOTS U15 V. SMRH U15

WEDNESDAY 17th AUGUST 2005, GOLDENACRE

The curtain came down on the 2005 Colts season with a six wicket defeat by Heriots U15’s at Goldenacre.

Duncan Logan won the toss for SMRH and decided to bat first.

Calum Goudie and Ross Grant opened the innings and although Grant was out in the second over, Goudie and Murray Muir added 50 for the second wicket.

Muir’s innings was greatly entertaining and he hit 3 4’s and 2 6’s in a quick fire 36 before giving Wilson a return catch.

Despite losing skipper Logan for 1, the run rate was always around 6 an over and Ross McLaren hit a bright and breezy 16 with 3 4’s at more than a run a ball.

All this while Calum Goudie was batting steadily at the other end and he was involved in an excellent partnership of 37 with Ramsay Muir for the sixth wicket.

Ramsay has the makings of a fine all round cricketer and his innings of 19 was a fitting end to what has been a very good season for him.

131-6 after 20 overs was a good performance and high praise must go to Calum Goudie who battled throughout the whole innings.

Unfortunately our bowlers picked the wrong time to produce their worst efforts of the season.

Heriots opener Steve Smith hit 13 4’s in a match winning 76 but was fed a succession of long hops and full tosses and with a fast outfield the home side were always ahead of the required rate.

He was eventually out in Stewart Shaw’s first over but by then the score was 115 and victory was in sight.

Stewart bowled Mildred soon after and was the one shining light in the bowling department.

Like his good friend Ramsay Muir, Stewart is a good all round cricketer and although rugby is his main sport, hopefully he will be able to combine both sports to good effect.

This defeat still had many plus points especially in the batting department and shouldn’t put too much of a dampener on what has been a successful and enjoyable season for our Colts at both U13 and U15 level.

A special thank you must go to our coach, Ranga Yasalal, who was extremely popular with all the boys and it was disappointing not to able to say our goodbyes to Ranga who left Scotland 2 weeks ahead of his scheduled departure.
