MELVILLE ROYAL HIGH CRICKET CLUB SEASON 2006 UNDER 15 COLTS REPORT |
|
|
A magnificent unbeaten 96 by
Murray Matheson was the highlight of the opening game of the 2006 Colts season
at Inverleith.
Newly appointed U15 captain Ramsay
Muir lost the toss and SMRH were surprisingly asked to bat first on a very warm
evening.
Andrew Brock and Calum Goudie
opened up for the home side and put on 82 for the first wicket. Goudie continued his excellent batting of last
summer while Brock added a touch of class to proceedings with 15 4’s in a
superb innings of 62.
All the Accies bowlers were
harshly treated by the SMRH opener’s although skipper Allison bowled 5 overs
for 32 runs and the wicket of Goudie. Both
openers were dismissed within a run of each other but any hope Accies had of
getting back into the match were dashed by Murray Matheson. Murray plundered 14 4’s and one six and was well supported by
Stewart Shaw as together they added 118 unbeaten runs for the 3rd
wicket. 201-2 in 25 overs was a
daunting target for Edinburgh Accies to reach.
Ramsay Muir and Ross McLaren
opened up for SMRH and it was soon
apparent that Accies would struggle to get anywhere near our formidable
total. Ramsay has added a yard or two
onto his pace from last summer and Ross bowled 4 very tight overs for only 11
runs.
Fraser Gillies, Nick Hunt and
Jamie Thornton all batted well in reaching double figures for the visitors but
were dismissed trying to accelerate the scoring.
For SMRH James Dickson and Andrew
Warnock both took 2 wickets and before the end of the Accies innings Jonathan
Thomson and Stewart Shaw had picked up their first wickets of the season.
Iain Mackie bowled 3 good overs
for 12 runs and took an excellent low catch at short mid-off to give James
Dickson his 2nd wicket.
The visitors finished their 25
overs on 85-9 to give SMRH victory by 116 runs. This was the perfect way to start the season with our batsmen
posting a big total to allow Ramsay Muir the luxury of using 10 bowlers against
the Accies batters.

SMRH lost an exciting encounter
with the Edinburgh CC by just 2 runs at Leith Academy school.
Edinburgh won the toss and decided
to bat first but were reduced to 15-3 by a fine opening burst from Ramsay Muir,
before being rescued by a very fine stand of 34 between Ehmer and Adeel Raza an
S1 Stewarts Melville schoolboy. Ehmer
compiled an excellent 34 before falling to Duncan Logan and Adeel reached 15
before lofting a catch to Logan of the bowling of Ben Docherty.
Young Ben had a great night in the
field and took a smart catch at square leg as well as running out Edinburgh
opener Imran with a superb throw. More
good batting by Nawaz who finished unbeaten on 25 helped Edinburgh reach a
respectable total of 108-6 in their 20 overs.
Ramsay Muir with 2-7 in 4 overs
was the pick of the bowlers and he received good support from Ross McLaren,
Stewart Shaw and Duncan Logan. Jonathan
Thomson however was certainly the unluckiest of the bowlers and had at least 2
catches dropped during his 2 overs.
Although SMRH lost Josh Mill in
the first over clean bowled by Imran for a duck, Murray Matheson and Duncan
Logan added 30 for the 2nd wicket to put the visitors seemingly in
control. Wickets fell at regular
intervals however and Murray, Duncan & Stewart Shaw were all dismissed when
well set.
A fine partnership of 35
between Calum Goudie and Ross McLaren
appeared to have swung the game in SMRH’s favour but Goudie was given out LBW
with the score on 101 and McLaren’s gutsy innings of 29 not out was in vain as
we finished 2 runs short.
Although it was disappointing to
lose such a close match it was none the less an exciting game to watch and most
boys contributed with bat or ball.
Finally special mention must be
made to Stewart Shaw and Ramsay Muir.
Both boys arrived back in Edinburgh mid-afternoon after 10 days at
Carbisdale and made their way down to Leith to play in the match.
A good effort, much appreciated.

A stunning century by Grange
opener Sam Hunt was the difference between the sides on a hot summer’s evening
at Scotland’s international ground.
Grange elected to bat first on
winning the toss and on a perfect batting track and fast outfield everything
was in place for a high-scoring match.
Rory Cannon struck an early blow
for the visitors when he had Stewarts Melville’s Peter Mountstephen very well
caught at mid wicket by Jonathan Thomson for 7 but the next wicket did not fall
until the final over of the innings.
Hector Cottam joined Hunt at the wicket and batted carefully in
finishing undefeated on 27 but it was Hunt who did nearly all the damage and he
hit no fewer than 19 4’s and a 6 in his
122.
To be fair to our bowlers they
never lost heart in trying circumstances and the outfield was so good that any
shot beating the field almost always reached the boundary. Our opening bowlers Ramsay Muir and Rory
Cannon looked quite dangerous at times and hopefully will be bowling for the
School 1st X1 before long.
Pride of place amongst the bowlers however must go to Ben Docherty who
bowled 4 overs for 34 but in his final over claimed the wickets of Sam Hunt and
Kit Gammell both clean bowled. The
“scalp” of Sam Hunt must be Ben’s best wicket so far in his short cricketing
career.
The home side’s final total of
173-3 was always going to be a tall order for SMRH to overhaul but Murray
Matheson and Calum Goudie put on 30 for the 1st wicket and both
batted well against a very good Grange attack.
Both reached the 20’s, before
Murray Callan scored a quick dozen and Andrew Warnock showed glimpses of his
undoubted ability with 4 classy boundaries in his innings of 18. It was pleasing when Jonathan Thompson hit a
4 behind square leg to bring up the 100 for SMRH in the final over of the
match.
Scott Mullins, son of Grange legend
Charlie, was the pick of the home team’s bowlers with 3-20 in a SMRH total of
101.
Grange won the match comfortably
by 72 runs but I’m sure all our lads enjoyed the experience of playing against
a top class side at a first class venue.

A hastily arranged friendly
between the two city rivals proved well worthwhile as the glorious weather
continued at Watsonians’ attractive Craiglockhart ground.
SMRH won the toss for the first
time this season and opted to bat first.
Duncan Logan was bowled by Whyte off the first ball of the game but
Murray Callan joined Josh Blake and immediately took advantage of the fast
outfield and short boundaries. Together
they added 65 for the 2nd wicket in quick time with Callan hitting
no fewer than 9 4’s in a dashing 40
before holing out to Currie off the bowling of McArthur. Blake batted throughout the innings and was
dismissed in the final over for an excellent 81 full of fine shots all round
the wicket. This was Josh’s first game
for SMRH for a few years and he played an invaluable knock.
After the dismissal of
Callan, Watsonians bowler Neil Yelland
took a hat-trick dismissing Ross Grant,
Ramsay Muir & Stewart Shaw.
From a healthy 65-1 SMRH were now 85-5 but an excellent
partnership of 59 between the reliable Andrew Warnock and Josh Blake allowed us
to reach a more than respectable 146-6 after 20 overs.
Watsonians never really threatened
our total and finished on 79-6 in their 20 overs. Only opener Currie got to grips with the SMRH attach and he
batted very well without any real support to remain unbeaten on 40 at the end
of the game. Ramsay Muir bowled a very
quick spell from the pavilion end and wasn’t flattered with final figures of
2-9 from 5 overs. He was well supported
by Stewart Shaw 2-15, James Dickson and
Jonathan Thomson. TJ Beattie kept
wicket well and took a good catch and in the outfield Ross Grant took 2 fine
catches.
Ross is I’m told a very good
all-round sportsman with football being his main sport. He is training with Cowdenbeath at the
moment but wouldn’t it be great to see
him running out at Easter Road in a Hibs jersey one day?

Penicuik’s picturesque ground at
Kirkhill was the setting for a fine SMRH win against a strong home side.
On being asked to bat first the
Penicuik opener’s Ricky Davidson and Cammy Crawford made a solid start against
some tight if somewhat wayward bowling from Ramsay Muir and Duncan Logan.
The scoring rate was never much
more than 4 an over throughout the whole innings but the first wicket did not
fall until the score had reached 69 when Andrew Brock had Crawford caught at
the wicket for a very good 32.
The home side were helped to a
final total of 99-3 in 20 overs by some slack fielding in the outfield, the
exception being some excellent work from
Calum Goudie and young Jonathan Thomson.
Andrew Brock was the pick of the
bowlers with 2-27 but all 6 bowlers used contributed in keeping the Penicuik
total down to under 100.
Goudie and Murray Matheson opened
up for SMRH but with the score on 11 Matheson was brilliantly caught by Liddle
at square leg for 5. Josh Blake joined
Goudie at the crease and they took the score to 49 before Blake was run out for
a useful 20.
Josh has been a valuable addition
to the team in recent weeks with bat and ball and has the makings of a fine
all-round cricketer in the future having already played several games for the
school 1st X1.
With the game now in the balance
Andrew Brock joined Goudie and they were to see SMRH home to victory with 2½ overs to spare.
Andrew started slowly against some
accurate Penicuik bowling but once he had settled in played some glorious shots
through the overs in reaching 41 not out.
The reliable Goudie finished unbeaten on 23 and as usual played the
perfect anchor role.
He has the ideal temperament for
an opening bat and we have been lucky to have him in the side for the last 2
seasons.

A visit from our near neighbours
along Ferry Road resulted in a fairly comfortable win for the hosts by 7
wickets.
On another warm summer’s evening
Heriots won the toss and decided to bat first but were rocked back by some very
quick opening bowling from Ramsay Muir and in particular Ross McLaren. Ross bowled a very full length and was
rewarded with the excellent figures of 4-16.
Three of his victims were clean bowled or LBW, a testament as to how
straight he bowled.
Duncan Logan and Stewart Shaw each
picked up a wicket before Jonathan Thomson chipped in with 2 wickets that
included the Heriots skipper Mildred for a patient 17. The visitors looked in deep trouble at 64-7
but were rescued by a very good partnership of 28 by Slessor and Shoosmith. Slessor top scored with 21 including 3
boundaries before being clean bowled by Ramsay Muir in his final over and
Shoosmith was undefeated on 11 when the innings ended.
95-9 after 20 overs was more than
had seemed likely throughout most of the Heriots innings.
Duncan Logan and Calum Goudie
opened for SMRH and after a steady start cut loose against the visitor’s
attack. Case bowled three good overs
for only 4 runs but Logan took to the bowling of Johnny White and Mildred,
blasting 7 boundaries in a match winning 40. This was Duncan’s best innings of the season and he is another
good prospect for the coming seasons.
With the opening stand on 72 Logan
skied a catch to wicket keeper Slessor of the bowling of Acheson and with the
very next ball Goudie was caught and bowled off the same bowler for a handy 21. Murray Callan prevented the hat‑trick
but was out to the final ball of Acheson’s 3 wicket over to leave SMRH on 76-3.
Murray Matheson and Andrew Warnock
steadied the ship however and with few alarms knocked off the required runs in
the 17th over.

A weakened home side were no match
for a pretty strong Watsonians X1.
SMRH lost the toss via phone link
(visiting skipper Robbie Scobie was stuck in traffic en route to
Inverleith) and Watsonians not
surprisingly decided to bat first.
Ramsay Muir and Duncan Logan
opened up and both bowled very good 5 over spells. Ramsay conceded only one boundary in his
stint and Duncan has a future as a fair seam bowler when he learns to pitch the
ball up another yard.
Andrew Chalmers, David Crummey and
Fraser Sands are all excellent batsmen however and having seen off the opening
attack soon put Watsonians in a commanding position.
The hard hitting Sands hit 5 4’s in his 44 before being very well caught
at deep mid on by Rory Paterson off James Dickson’s bowling while Chalmers
batted the whole innings for 49 not out and only failed to reach a well
deserved half century through the inability of his captain Scobie to get off
strike. Dickson bowled well after a
nervy start to take 2-10 and it was good to see Michael Conner bowl 2 good
overs on debut at the death in conceding only 10 runs.
Watsonians final total of 124-2
was sure to be a challenging one for SMRH to chase. Short of several regulars due to holidays the home side needed a
good start from their top order and despite losing Murray Callan early without
scoring, Josh Blake and Duncan Logan
batted sensibly in adding 20 for the 2nd wicket. Unfortunately both were clean bowled hitting
across the line when looking well set for a decent score and I’m afraid the
rest of the batting collapsed against a competent Watsonians attack.
Chalmers, Scobie, Sands and Ross
Crummey are all fine bowlers, indeed Crummey took 3 wickets for 3 runs in his
one over.
The end came in the thirteenth
over when Rory Paterson was bowled by Chalmers and Watsonians had won by 82
runs.
