WATSONIANS U15 v SMRH U15
AT MYRESIDE
MAY 23rd 2007
WATSONIANS WON BY 5 RUNS
SMRH lost out to the home side by just 5 runs in an
entertaining season opener at Myreside.
All our S3 boys were at Carbisdale so it was very
much an under strength side that took the field under Ramsay Muir’s captaincy.
Watsonians batted first and opened with their
Merchiston school age group internationalists Patrick Baker and Peter Legget.
They had taken the score to 31 with few alarms when
Baker was outdone by a splendid slower ball from Adeel Raza and was clean
bowled.
Adeel was in the middle of a great spell of bowling
and returned figures of 4‑1‑4-1 which was a fine effort against
classy batsmen.
The pitch at Myreside is a batsman’s paradise with a
quick outfield and short boundaries and it was no surprise to see Watsonians
race to 130-2 in their 20 overs.
Peter Leggett reached 50 just before the close and
was run out to the last ball of the innings, whereas Craig Hamilton hit a much
quicker 50 which included nine 4’s.
Ramsay Muir, Ross Grant and Gavin Milne all did their
best to stem the flow of runs.
Calum Goudie and Ross Grant opened up for SMRH and
although Grant went early for 2 with the score at 11 a very fine partnership
between Murray Callan and Goudie which realised 42 runs put SMRH back in the
game.
After a slow start Callan hit an excellent 58 which
included nine 4’s and a six and as long as he remained we were never out the game.
Having one dart too many Murray was bowled with the
score on 97 but Adeel Raza and Stewart Shaw carried on his good work and put on
23 in quick time for the 4th wicket.
Stewart hit three 4’s in his bright and breezy 12
including a lovely clip off his legs while Adeel finished not out 23.
Watsonians had just done enough with the bat however
and we finished 5 runs short on 125-5 when the final ball was bowled.

HADDINGTON U15 v SMRH U15
AT NEILSON PARK
MAY 30th 2007
SMRH WON BY 4 WICKETS
An amazing over from Ben Docherty played a major part
in a 5 wicket win for SMRH.
Haddington batted first and got off to a fast start
with opener Mann hitting Ramsay Muir’s first 2 balls to the boundary.
Ramsay recovered well however and conceded only 12
runs in total in his three overs as well as bowling Mann for 12 in his third
over.
The Tufail brothers were now at the crease with Ash
in particular looking dangerous and at 48-1 the home side looked in a good
position. Ramsay Muir and Rory Cannon
are good bowlers but this season we have an excellent all round attack with
Iain Mackie, Alex Dry, Ben Docherty and Andrew Warnock to back up Ramsay.
Iain Mackie removed R Tufail well caught behind by TJ
Beattie and Calum Goudie took a catch at mid off to remove Ash Tufail off
Andrew Warnock’s leg spin. Haddington
were still well set to top 100 when Ben Docherty entered the attack with
devastating consequences for the home side.
His first two balls were wides but he then proceeded
to take 3 wickets in 4 balls to leave the hosts struggling on 76-7.
His first wicket was the most important. Loretto schoolboy Jonny Perriam was looking
in good touch and had just hoisted Andrew Warnock for 6 over mid-wicket when he
was beaten by a good ball from Ben and was bowled.
Warnock and Docherty each picked up a late wicket and
returned figures of 2‑8 and 4-8 respectively.
Haddington finished up on 80-9 which was a lot less
than had looked likely.
Calum Goudie and Murray Callan got SMRH off to a
great start and at 35-0 an away win looked a formality.
However a dramatic collapse ensued and we lost 4
wickets with the score on 35. Both
openers, Jonathan Thomson and Rory Cannon perished with the scoreboard
unmoved. Callan had hit three 4’s and a
6 in his 25.
TJ Beattie and Andrew Warnock were now together and
these good pals played very sensibly in doubling the score.
At 70-4 everything seemed fine but Warnock was bowled
for 14 hitting across the line and TJ was caught off a leading edge having
scored 15.
The Haddington total was now in reach however and a
couple of lusty blows by Ramsay Muir took us home to a 4 wicket victory with 9
balls to spare.
Ben Docherty’s over was vital however as I don’t
think we would have relished chasing too many more than the Haddington total of
80.
A successful run chase was celebrated in Haddington
High Street with chips and soft drinks.
Many thanks to Dr Beattie and Mr Crawley for their
help in transporting the boys down to Haddington.

SMRH U15 v. EDINBURGH C.C.
U15
AT INVERLEITH
JUNE 6TH 2007
SMRH WON BY 4 RUNS
We had been involved in a
few close encounters already this season and our latest match against the
Edinburgh CC youngsters was no exception.
SMRH were asked to bat
first and Ross Grant and TJ Beattie got us off to a good start scoring 18 by
the end of the fourth over.
Ross was first out caught
in the gulley, the first of four victims for Edinburgh skipper Bilal and when
Jonathan Thomson was bowled off his pads we were now 18-2.
Andrew Warnock joined TJ
and together they added a valuable 30 for the 3rd wicket.
Andrew is a talented
cricketer and was to play a few games for the school 1st X1 before
the summer end helping the school to victory against Dollar in a very close
finish.
He will have a further
three seasons in the 1st X1 and it will be interesting to see how he
progresses as an all rounder with his classy batting and useful “leggies “.
TJ has come on leaps and
bounds this season and I will be surprised if he doesn’t become an excellent
opening bat / wicket-keeper in the near future.
Mr Ranson at the school
knows all about Thomas and with some good winter net practice behind him I
would hope he will be competing for a place in the 1st X1 at school
in 2008.
Both were to perish with
the score on 48 but Ramsay Muir, Adeel Raza, Stewart Shaw, Alex Dry and Iain
Mackie all contributed with the bat and
by the close we had scored a respectable 96.
Stewarts Melville schoolboy
Mohammad became the 2nd visiting bowler to take 4 wickets and he was
to bat sensibly later in the day.
Bowling is our strength
however and I always feel that a score of around 100 puts us in with a good
chance.
Ramsay Muir and Adeel Raza
opened up and as usual did not let the team down.
Muir hardly conceded a run
in his spell and had opener Collam caught at point by Adeel for 5.
Raza followed up his great
bowling at Myreside with 2 more wickets and like Ramsay was most economical.
Edinburgh’s 4th
wicket pair of Zubair and Saif added 36 in quick time and at 60-3 the came
could have gone either way but our sixth bowler Stewart Shaw entered the attack
and dismissed both with the first and third balls of his opening over.
The visitors chipped away
at our total without really threatening to win the game and some good fielding
from SMRH resulted in three late run outs.
Tail ender Khalil needed to
hit a 4 of the last ball to tie the match but was run out and so a 4 run
victory was the margin for the home side.

SMRH U15 v. EDINBURGH
ACCIES U15
AT INVERLEITH
JUNE 13TH 2007
SMRH WON BY 79 RUNS
A very young Accies team were no match for SMRH and a
79 run victory was our third win a row.
With few alarms Ramsay Muir and Murray Callan
compiled 51 for the first wicket against some tidy bowling and keen fielding.
Accies included several U13 players and their
attitude was first class. Playing against older guys didn’t seem to be a
problem and they never complained.
Most of our batsman spent valuable time in the middle
apart from poor TJ who not for the first time in his short career was run out.
Josh Blake, Mike Crawley and Jonathan Thomson all
batted well and it was good to see both David Ilyine and Yousef Hussain make their
debuts for the club.
141-3 was a good score and gave home captain Ramsay
Muir plenty of scope to manoeuvre his bowlers around.
Everyone turned their arms over in the Academy
innings and I felt our guys played the game in the correct manner.
Iain Mackie bowled Ellis for a duck but Benn and Orr
batted superbly and added close to 50 for the 2nd wicket.
They have obviously been well coached at school and
are batsman with a big future.
Most of our guys tried their hand at spin bowling
with some success although I’m not sure if Andrew Warnock has many rivals
within the club in the slow bowling department.
Iain Mackie, Ramsay Muir and Adeel Raza all took
wickets and the Accies youngsters ended up on a respectable 62-4.

SMRH U15 v. PENICUIK U15
AT INVERLEITH
JUNE 21st 2007
SMRH WON BY 4 WICKETS
SMRH produced a very good all round performance to
progress to the semi final of the Lothians Cup.
Penicuik were asked to bat first after Ramsay Muir
had won the toss and opened up with Grant Davidson and Henderson against the
bowling of Muir and Ilyine.
An early boundary by Grant Davidson looked ominous
for the home team but after Henderson
departed caught at mid on by the reliable Ben Docherty, David Ilyine captured
the prize wicket of Davidson very well caught by Stewart Shaw to a skyer off a
leading edge.
Our bowling and fielding was sharp from the off and
young Johnny Thomson took a catch similar to Stewart Shaw’s to remove Cammie
Crawford for 5.
Penicuik were soon 37-4 when Alex Dry bowled R Liddle
for 2.
The visitors were now almost totally reliant on Ricky
Davidson for a competitive score and although he batted sensibly and for a long
time he was never really able to force the pace against some excellent bowling.
With the score at 60 Davidson was 5th out
bowled by the leg spin of Andrew Warnock who soon after had D Liddle stumped by
wicket-keeper Ilyine.
Penicuik’s final total was only 67-6 in 20 overs.
All 6 bowlers used did a fine containing job and it
was good to see Ross Grant bowl 3 overs for only 7 runs and Stewart Shaw
concede only 3 runs from his 2 overs.
Both these lads are in the school 1st XV
and were shortly to head out to South Africa on a School Development rugby
tour.
Dry and Grant opened up for SMRH but were both back
in the pavilion with 22 on the board.
Andrew Warnock joined Jonathan Thomson at the wicket
and they went a long way to winning the game with an excellent stand of 20.
Both lads ran well between the wickets and always
made sure we were up with the scoring rate.
A mini mid- innings collapse soon resulted however
and when David Ilyine was stumped for a duck we were 52-5.
Penicuik spinner Thornton had taken 3 quick wickets
and was to add Blake Steven to his victims in finishing with 4-16 from his 4
overs.
The visitors though had not scored enough runs and
Ramsay Muir and Stewart Shaw saw us to victory with three overs and 4 wickets
to spare.
This was our best performance of the season and was
made even better when taking into account that three of our top players TJ
Beattie, Iain Mackie and Adeel Raza were on representative duty in
Belfast.

SMRH U15 v. CARLTON U15
AT INVERLEITH
JUNE 27th 2007
CARLTON WON BY 11 RUNS
SMRH lost out to Carlton by 11 runs in a low scoring
encounter at Inverleith.
In what was to become a familiar trend our bowling
was excellent but our batting less so.
Our full strength bowling attack of Muir, Ilyine,
Dry, Mackie, Raza and Warnock would compare favourably with any U15 team in the
country but too often our batsman didn’t make enough runs.
Carlton really struggled against all our bowlers and
managed a paltry 64-8 in 20 overs with only U13 players Angus Rive and Zacchi
Yusaf reaching double figures.
Ramsay Muir bowled superbly and was too quick for the
early Carlton batsman. He returned figures of 2-6 in 4 overs and hardly bowled
a bad ball.
As in the Penicuik cup match all the bowlers were at
the top of their game and Andrew Warnock matched Ramsay’s figures of 2-6 in 4
overs.
Andrew is a great guy to have around the team and has
the priceless asset of making things happen even when not at his best.
We were to sorely miss him later in the summer when
holidays became a factor in team selection.
Our 2 opening batsman TJ Beattie and James Dickson
took to the field as our remaining players organised a barbecue.
Seemed a great idea with school finishing 2 days
later.
Carlton had 3 slow bowlers in their ranks and this
was to prove crucial to the result.
We were bowled out for only 53 with the main damage
being done by Whatley 3-14 and Moynihan 2-9.
Both bowled slow off spin and our batsman were found
wanting when having to make the pace.
TJ Beattie, Jonathan Thomson and David Ilyine were
all run out and when Alex Dry was clean bowled by Nick Martin’s first ball SMRH
were 43-8.
Adeel Raza and Ramsay Muir were our last hope and
added 10 before Adeel chipped a catch to mid off.
Ramsay top scored with 13 not out but SMRH came up 11
runs short.

HERIOTS U15 v SMRH U15
AT GOLDENACRE
JULY 11th 2007
SMRH WON BY 48 RUNS
Another excellent bowling effort from SMRH resulted
in a resounding 48 run win at a very warm Goldenacre.
The wicket at Goldenacre on the main rugby pitch is
not the best and our 1st innings total of 83-8 was always going to
be hard to beat.
Although Josh Blake departed in the 3rd
over for 5 with the score on 10, Jonathan Thomson and David Ilyine added 29 for
the second wicket which was easily the best partnership of the match.
Ilyine’s 18 was the top score in the match and he is
what I would describe as a bowling all rounder.
He has broken into the school 1st X1 this
season and has produced some good spells with the ball coming on late in the
innings.
Some runs with the bat from David will not go amiss
however although he batted very well in
a crisis with Andrew Warnock in a hard fought win over Dollar Academy a
few weeks ago.
Jonathan Thomson batted very responsibly and on a
very difficult wicket refused to give his wicket away cheaply.
He is a fine fielder and as a batsman likes the ball
coming onto the bat. I will be interested to see how he develops in the next
couple of years and hopefully JT will get to bat at the top of the order at
school which is his best position.
Ramsay Muir, Adeel Raza and Stewart Shaw scored
useful runs in the middle order to ensure a good total and the Coleman twins
and Jordan Kynoch made sure that we batted our full 20 overs.
Addel hit the only 2 two 4’s in our innings but the
shot of the day was a towering 6 over wide mid on by Stewart Shaw.
Heriots bowled pretty well and Jamieson was the pick
of the bowlers with 4-14.
In reply Ramsay Muir bowled a superb 1st
over to dismiss Acheson first ball and White with the final ball of the over.
The wicket of Johny White was crucial and it was
great to see Ramsay ripping through his defences to dismiss this prolific run
scorer for just 1 run.
Heriots never got going and some of the catching by
SMRH was first rate. David Ilyine, Adam Tait, Gavin Milne and Adeel Raza all
took very good catches.
Adeel completed a fine all round game with the superb
figures of 4-12 in 4 overs.
I was impressed with Adeel’s bowling on every
occasion this summer and how we missed him in our last 2 games.
He is shortly to go into S3 and will I’m sure become
a very good cricketer.
Adam Coleman took a catch behind to give Adam Tait
his first wicket for the club and Heriots were bowled out for only 35 in 16.3
overs.

FAULDHOUSE U15 v SMRH U15
AT FAULDHOUSE
AUGUST 1st 2007
FAULDHOUSE WON BY 15 RUNS
Adeel Raza and Mike Crawley were caught in traffic in
Edinburgh and failed to meet up with the rest of the players for the trip to
Fauldhouse.
This had quite bearing on the match as we lost
another low scoring game by 15 runs.
Rain early in the day had put the game in doubt but
by 6pm the sun was out as Ramsay Muir prepared to bowl the first ball.
Fauldhouse adopted a real West Indian approach to
batting and threw the bat at almost everything.
Their first 4-5 batsman all have loads of attacking
potential but as usual our attack was impressive.
Ramsay seemed most affected by the damp run ups and
was hit for 24 in his three overs but during his short spell dismissed the
talented McIlduff and Mahon.
David Ilyine shot out 3 of the home team’s batsman in
his four over spell and Alex Dry bowled his best spell of the season in taking
2-7 in his three overs.
Another talented all rounder has been unearthed in
Alex and with his hard hitting batting to go with his excellent pace bowling he
is another young lad who should be aiming to play for the School 1st
XI as soon as possible.
Fauldhouse were toiling on 56-8 and before long were
all out for 58 with the last two wickets falling to the Docherty brothers.
Scott cleaned bowled James Mildren for 6 before older
brother Ben had Darren Allan caught at slip by Matt Coleman for 2.
Even with only 8 players a score of 59 should have
been attainable but all season long we have struggled to score runs and this
game was no exception.
There were no signs of alarm early on mind you as TJ
Beattie and Alex Dry made batting look easy as we entered the twenties without
loss.
Alex played very well and was comfortably top score
in the match with 25.
He certainly did not deserve to be on the losing
side.
Our mid order however struggled to make any impact
against some good Fauldhouse bowling although Ramsay Muir was unlucky to be run
out by a direct throw from the boundary.
Fauldhouse took our 7th wicket with the
score on 43 still 15 runs short but unfortunately this meant that we were all
out leaving Ben Docherty stranded on 2 not out.
Ben has not played much cricket this summer due to a
school exchange to Germany but never lets you down when he plays and he has
certainly passed on his skills to young Scott who has a great future as an all
round sportsman.
He was a member of the Stewarts Melville football
team who won the Scottish Cup alongside U13 cricketers Bruce Scott and Campbell
MacLeod.
I wonder if any of these 3 will one day play for the
Hibs?
Once again grateful thanks to Mrs Beattie and Vic
Coltherd for helping transport the boys out to West Lothian.

SMRH U15 v CARLTON U15
AT INVERLEITH
AUGUST 8th 2007
CARLTON WON BY 5 WICKETS
Carlton reached the final of the Lothians Cup with a
5 wicket win over SMRH.
The winning run however was scored with only 2 balls
remaining and our lads fought hard to the end.
TJ Beattie opened up with Jack Jones and looked in
good touch early with a superb cut to the point boundary.
Next ball however he was a touch unlucky to be caught
at long leg of a top edge.
TJ has not scored as many runs as hoped this season
but I am convinced he will score lots of runs in the future and with his
wicket-keeping and spin bowling has much to offer.
Jack Jones had gone early and when Alex Dry was
bowled for 1 we were in trouble at 11-3.
Iain Mackie joined skipper Ramsay Muir at the wicket
and they fought hard to allow us to post a challenging score.
Ramsay is working hard on his batting and played very
sensibly with Iain in adding 20 for the 4th wicket before losing his
off stump to Yusaf.
Another good partnership developed however when Iain
Samson playing his first game of the season joined Mackie and they took the
score well past 50.
Samson did his best to hang around for Iain Mackie and
although he scored only 5 the 35 runs added for the 6th wicket were
invaluable.
All this time Mackie played superbly and he was to
finish unbeaten on 42, an innings which contained five 4’s.
More known as a bowler this is as well as I have seen
Iain bat and I know Mr Ranson has high hopes for him as a genuine all rounder
next summer.
Our final total was a respectable 80 but it was a
shame that Mackie was left high and dry with still 3 overs of the 20 remaining.
Carlton have a strong batting line-up but as per
usual Muir and Mackie bowled well and runs were hard to come by.
Both opening bowlers took an early wicket to give us
hope with the visitors on 26-2 but a third wicket stand between Kennedy and
Everett was to prove decisive.
These young lads batted very well against some good
bowling not least from TJ Beattie who bowled 4 very accurate overs for only 7
runs.
Although Kennedy and Everett were out with the score
in the 60’s the visitors had kept back a couple of their best players in Ravi Bhopal and Tom Barrett and the former
hit the winning runs in the final over.
Once again holidays meant that we were very much
under strength but this can’t be helped and all our boys enjoyed our quarter
final win over a strong Penicuik team only to fall at the semi final stage to
an excellent Carlton outfit.
