AUGUST
Saturday 23rd - not actually raining today, bit every other day it had been. Grounds sodden, no cricket and the end of the 2008 playing season.
Saturday 16th - in what always looked a low scoring game, given the damp outfield, the 1st X1 lost by 1 wicket at Inverleith against Falkland. The 1st X1 batting first made 84 with Greg Bissett top scoring with 15. The Falkland 5th wicket stand of 38 turned the match in their favour before further wickets fell setting up a tense finish, but with a couple of lusty blows from the lower order Falkland just managed to scramble over the line at the end. Tello Motsamai took 4 for 16 and Andrew Brock 2 for 4.
The 2nd X1 made it 4 wins out of 5 against Stenhousemuir 2nd X1 at Inverleith. The visitors were bowled out for 80 with Ross McLaren 3 for 11 and Colin Brown and James Crispin taking 2 wickets each. An opening stand over 50 between Colin Brown (28) and Victor Coltherd (25no) ensured an easy victory by 8 wickets. Alas with West Lothian beating Haddington, this almost certainly relegated the 2nd X1 to Division 4 for next season.
The 3rd X1 match at Livingston was cancelled as the ground was unplayable.
Saturday 9th - rain, rain and more rain = cricket no chance.
Saturday 2nd - in the battle of the low scores the 1st X1 just beat Weirs by 11 runs at Inverleith. The 1st X1 were all out for 77 and had to thank Vishal Shah, batting at eight, for his late contribution of 25 to get them there. At 60 for 6 Weirs almost looked home but thanks to wickets from Matt Coyle and Adam McHoul, Weirs collapsed to 66 all out.
The 2nd X1 had a convincing win against West Lothian at Inverleith by over 90 runs.
The 3rd X1 beat Murrayfield DAFS at Roseburn, despite being short of players. Chasing 135 for victory, Rich Bartsch made 60, James Gray 31 not out and Eddie Jones 25 in their 6 wicket win.
JULY
Saturday 26th - a somewhat one sided contest for the 1st X1 at the Peoples Park, Dyce. On electing to bat the 1st X1 were all out for 94 in the 38th over. Richard Hannam top scored with 23 and Simon Ditchfield made 18. Stoneywood-Dyce only took to the 23rd over to win by 10 wickets.
Drummond Trinity again cast gloom on the 2nd X1, this time at Inverleith Park. Batting first a much under strength 2nd X1 could only make 57 and Drummond Trinity won easily by 8 wickets.
The 3rd X1 lost narrowly to West Lothian by 7 runs. West Lothian were all out for 150 in the 40th over, with Matt Steedman taking 2 for 45. The reply was 143 all out again in the 40th over, with Rich Bartsch top scoring with 45 and Stewart Farquharson made 22.
Saturday 19th - the 1st X1 were only the lucky ones to get a game this week at Dumfries, as rain cancelled both the 2nd X1 and 3rd X1 matches in Edinburgh.
The 1st X1 won the toss and batted but unfortunately could only make 119, Andy Gamble top scored with 40 and Jimmy Moran was next best with 32. This wasn't the strongest 1st X1 of the season due to availabilities and injuries and 3 players Craig Goold, Ramsay Muir and Ross Logan all made their SNCL debuts. Dumfries only required half of their overs to win by 7wickets, with Tello Motsamai taking 2 for 35.
Saturday 12th - the 1st X1 were well beaten by title chasing Dunfermline, who on batting first scored 267 for 6. Andy Gamble had 2 for 46 and Adam McHoul also had 2 wickets, but suffered severe punishment in his final overs. SMRH were somewhat handicapped for batting with both Pete Dunmbar injured hand and likely to be out for the rest of the season, and Vishal Shah leg injury.
A slow start from Tello Motsamai and James Park provided a solid base, but when they were both out for 34 and 28 respectively, only Sam Nelson with 27 in last game before returning home provided much resistance, as the team were all out for 132.
Special mention to Alf Bissett for coming on as sub fielder for Pete Dunbar - may be it's a something from a different era, but the offer of a sub fielder from the opposing ranks doesn't seem to happen anymore?
The 2nd X1 won by a run against Grange on a bowler friendly wicket at Fettes. The 2nd X1 were all out for 125 with a splendid 55 from Ross Logan easily top score. Richard Hannam took 3 for 27 and Ed Philip and James Crispin two wickets each. The game ended in somewhat sensational fashion with Colin Brown spilling the vital catch, but recovered well from the drop to run out the last batsman!
The 3rd X1 had a walk-over as Edinburgh 3rd X1 were unable to raise a side..
Saturday 5th - the weather forecast proved correct when the expected rain arrived after about an hours play when all 3 matches were abandoned.
The 1st X1 had made one of their best starts of the season against league leaders RH Corstorphine at Barnton, making 59 for 1 after 14 overs with Tello Motsamai on 36 not out. Peter Dunbar was out as the match was abandoned at the end of the 14th over with a score of 20.
The 2nd X1 were on 47 for 1 after 14 overs against Preston Village at Inverleith.
The 3rd X1 had Musselburgh in some trouble at 46 for 6 in the 19th over at Lewisvale Park. Rich Bartsch took 4 for 22 and Robert Styles 2 for 20 when the match was abandoned. This is the 3rd weekend in a row, that 3rd X1 have failed to complete a full match due to the rain.
JUNE
Saturday 28th - the 1st X1 put on a poor batting display in reply to Prestwick's total of 166 for 9 in their 50 overs, in which Matt Coyle took 3 for 20 in overs and Adam McHould and Abbi Mehta had two wickets each. Wickets fell at regular intervals in the SMRH innings and only Andy Gamble with 28 and Pete Mitchell with 18 provided much resistance.
The 2nd X1 won a game at last against fellow league strugglers Haddington at Neilson Park. The home team were bowled out for 157 with Richard Hannam 4 for 29 and Chas Butcher 2 for 12. Richard Hannam then gained the man of the match award batting patiently through most of the innings making 40 runs, with Murray Mathieson contributing a very good 39 to ensure the 2nd X1 were comfortable winners by 5 wickets.
The 3rd X1 had Dalgety Bay at 14 for 3 at one stage, but they recovered well to make 219. Richard Bartsch had 3 for 23 and Robert Styles, Eddie Jones and Matt Steedman all 2 wickets each. Rain called a halt to the SMRH reply after 21 overs, with the 3rd X1 score on 72 for 3, and the game was abandoned as a no result.
Sunday 22nd - the 3rd X1 match against Largo 3rd X1 at Largo was cancelled due to rain.
Saturday 21st - the 1st X1 escaped the later wet weather, by quickly bowling out Edinburgh for 49 at the Academy Park, were Andy Gamble took 4 for 23 and Tello Motsamai 3 for 22. SMRH easy winners by 8 wickets.
The 2nd X1 bowled out RH Corstorphine for 187 at Inverleith with Ally Buchan, Jonny Brock and James Crispin all 2 wickets each. Unfortunately rain stopped play with the 2nd X1 reply on 55 for 2.
Saturday 14th - the 1st X1 had a very good away win against Falkland at Scroggie Park. Batting first Tello Motsamai scored his first century for the club, exactly 100, Jimmy Moran continued his good form with 78 in a team total of 271 for 5 at the end of 50 overs. The Falkland reply was all out 236 with Tello Motsamai, Jimmy Moran and Adam McHoul all with 2 wickets each.
The 2nd X1 lost by 4 wickets to Stenhousemuir at the Tryst. The 2nd X1 were all out 187 with the best scores coming from Ally Buchan 48 and Ross Logan 36. Pick of the bowlers were Rich Hannam 2 for 33 and Brad Mitchell 2 for 19.
The 3rd X1 scored a massive 294 for 8 against Livingston with Venu Addepalli scoring 88, Rich Bartsch 86 and Ashish Vakil 41. Livingston's response was 152 for 7 with Eddie Jones returning figures of 3 for 28.
Sunday 8th - In the Scottish Cup tie at Kirkhill, the 1st X1 elected to bat and got their highest score of the season 257 for 8 after the 50 overs. Vishal Shah at last got some runs and got the innings of to a fast start before a leg injury almost immediately ended his innings on 37. Tello Motsamai also got 37, but Jimmy Moran was the hero scoring a splendid 110 not out which included 5 sixes. However, Penicuik also scored runs quickly from the start and only 1 wicket was taken, as they reached the target in the 48th over, with two further batsman scoring hundreds.
Saturday 7th - In a bottom of the table clash for the 1st X1 at Renfrew, the home side batted first and were bowled out for 131 with Andy Gamble taking 3 for 26 and Andy Brock 3 for 24. Runs were always going to be hard to get - Jimmy Moran scored 36 and Greg Bissett made a very patient 25 not out before running out of partners and the team 11 runs short of victory.
For the 2nd X1 this was a match that got away. Batting first they scored 212 for 6 with Adam McHoul 58 not out, Colin Brown 58, his first 50 for the 2nd X1 since 2000, and Jonny Brock 35. Dunnikier were in some trouble, but a 6th wicket stand of near 100, gave Dunnikier victory which didn't seem possible at one stage.
The 3rd X1 lost to Penicuik at Beeslack School.
Sunday 1st - only 5 balls were possible is the Scottish Cup tie against Penicuik at Kirkhill before rain abandoned play and set up a re-arranged match for the next week.
MAY
Saturday 31st - the 1st X1 made 219 for 7 batting first against Weirs at Albert Park. However, a very weak bowling provided the 1st X1 with little chance as Weirs won by 8 wickets. Jimmy Moran made 89 and Tello Motsamai 64.
The 2nd X1 still suffering some shell shock of the previous week's debacle, again faced more runs in 246 for 9 posted by West Lothian at Boghall. In reply the 2nd X1 were all out for 178 with Bala Nagarajan making 67 not out and Ali Buchan on debut 50.
The 3rd X1 unfortunately had to scratch from their match against Murrayfield DAFS due to lack of numbers.
Saturday 24th - not a good day for the 1st X1 and even worse for the 2nd X1.
The 1st X1 were asked to bat first at Inverleith against Stoneywood-Dyce and were all out for 143. Tello Motsamai top scored with 27, but only useful contributions rather than major contributions were offered by the remaining batsman. The Stoneywood-Dyce after a quiet few overs at the start, quickly got on top hitting freely around the ground winning by 9 wickets in the 28th over.
The 2nd X1 were absolutely hammered by Drummond Trinity at Inverleith, who on batting first made an incredible 365 for 1 declaring in the 43rd over after I Khan completed his hundred, following 152 from the opener J Nasir. The reply was a lowly 66, thankfully boosted by both Chas Butcher and James Crispin making 21 each.
The 3rd X1 made it a better day, winning easily against West Lothian 3rd X1 at the Gyle. Batting first they made 246 for 7 with Logan Clark on 65 and James Gray 60. The reply was only 31 with Logan Clark and Ashis Vakis both 4 wickets each.
Tuesday 20th - in the 1st round of this year's Masterton Trophy the 1st X1 lost by 46 runs away to Stenhousemuir at the The Tryst. Stenhousemuir batted first and made 157 for 5 in their 20 overs with Vishal Shah best of the bowlers with 2 for 33. In reply SMRH were all out for 111 with Andy Gamble making 42 and Richard Hannam 28.
Saturday 17th - first wins of the season for both the 1st and 3rd X1's.
Scotland scorer Neil Leitch was at book-side to record the Club & 3rd X1's first win of the season. Holy Cross 3rd X1 made it to 100 for 8 in their 45 overs with Matt Steedman 2-12 and David Gray 2 for 30. The 3rd X1 wasted no time in the run chase taking just under 17 overs to win the match by 9 wickets. Eddie Jones 40* and Robert Styles 33* were amongst the quick runs.
The 1st X1 had a very impressive first win of the season against Dumfries at Inverleith. Dumfries were all out for 161 with debutant Sam Nelson taking for 4 for 42 and Abi Mehta 2 for 15. Saturday 3rd - RH Corstorphine were comfortable winners at Inverleith against the 1st X1 whose total of 122 was never going to be enough. Andy Gamble made 39 to go with his 3 for 32, as RH Corstorphine won by 6 wickets
On their first appearance at Polwarth Park, the 2nd X1 were heavily defeated by the village people of Prestonpans, who were 217 for 9 batting first. Alas lack of numbers didn't help in either bowling or batting, and the 2nd X1 made only 82 in reply. The best of the day was David Napier with 21 runs, and Bala Nagarajan who made 20 and took 3 for 23.
The 3rd X1 were up against a strong Musselburgh 2nd X1 side at Inverleith. Batting first they made 237 all out with Robert Stles 2 for 30 the best bowler. In reply, the Captain left the field for hospital after being hit in the face, but Logan Clark then hit an incredible 137 not out, sharing a century stand with Jim Foster who made a somewhat quieter 18. The 3rd X1 were all out 209, but alas the lack of a full eleven didn't help matters.
APRIL

The 2nd X1 had better luck in Edinburgh completing a full game, but unfortunately a losing start against Haddington. The 2nd X1 were all out 137 with Andrew Brock making 37. In the bowling for Haddington both father and son Hiley had identical figures of 3 for 25. Haddington won by 5 wickets thanks to some later order hitting.
Saturday 19th - the season gets underway in freezing cold conditions. A relatively strong 1st X1 for this time of the season played the School on the artificial wicket. Three batsman played themselves into form - Andy Gamble with 56 not out, Jimmy Moran 47 and the return to Edinburgh of Ryan Sales who made 45 not out in a total of 207 for 6 in 40 overs.
